What we believe
Hopeman
Baptist Church stands within the mainstream of the Christian Church and
is therefore committed to upholding the central truths of the Christian
faith.
We
believe that God created us to have fellowship with him but that
this was damaged by our sinful rebellion against him. In order that our
broken relationship with God could be restored God sent his only Son
Jesus Christ to die on the cross in our place to take away our
sin and the punishment that we deserved. Jesus was then raised again
to life, after which he ascended into heaven and then sent the Holy
Spirit.
We
believe that everyone needs to receive God's forgiveness and
cleansing from sin. This can happen when firstly we confess our
sin, secondly acknowledge that Jesus died in our place and trust in
his saving work on the cross, and thirdly ask him to fill us with
his Holy Spirit so that we can be spiritually born anew. We believe
that by responding to God in this way that he accepts us his children
and by the power of the Holy Spirit enables us to live for
him.
As a
church we also believe that it is important to be followers
of Jesus and to help us do this we look to the Bible, God's Word
for his guidance
and instruction.
As
a Baptist Church we are committed to Believer's Baptism by
immersion as an expression of our personal faith in Jesus as
practiced by the early church. We regard each local church as being able to administer it's own
affairs under
the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are
also a member of the Baptist Union of Scotland and are willing to work
with Christians in other denominations.
