Helen's Story

I was born and brought up in a small clifftop village – 12 miles south of Peterhead. It is called Whinnyfold but in the Doric,” Finnyfal”. I am a twin with Ethel and have an older sister, Flora.

Our claim to fame – we were born on Coronation Day 1937 and folk would speak of us as “The Coronation Twins”.

My parents both loved the Lord. My Dad was converted as a young man along with several others during Revival Gospel services conducted by the late David Walker, an evangelist from Aberdeen.  My Mum was saved at 18 after listening to a preacher – his subject “The Serpent on the Pole” when the people were urged to “look and live”. She looked to Calvary and saw Jesus die there for her. We were told the stories of Jesus for as long as I can remember.

The only holidays when young were to our relations in Peterhead where, of course, we were expected to attend the meeting in Prince Street Open Brethren Hall.  One Sunday evening when I was 14, I listened to a preacher from Glasgow, Mr Tallantyre. He made it clear that there was no middle path to Heaven. You were either saved or lost on the way to Heaven or hell. I was very moved by this message and knew that I was not ready to meet Jesus. That night I knelt by my bedside in my Auntie’s grouse and asked for Jesus to save me. I quoted the hymn

Jesus I will trust Thee

Trust Thee with my soul.

Guilty, lost and helpless

Thou canst make me whole.

I was very shy and didn’t tell anyone at the time for which I always regretted. When 18, the first Billy Graham Crusade was on in London, We tuned in to listen on the radio. While listening to the choir sing “To God be the Glory” I felt a strong desire to be Baptised and 2 weeks later I publicly confessed my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Some time later my friend and I drove the 14 miles to Mintlaw where Mr Harry Burness, Evangelist from Aberdeen was conducting Gospel tent meetings. We were asked to stay for a cup of tea after the meeting. Helping Mr Burness in the mission was a young Evangelist from Lossiemouth called Sandy Stewart to whom we were introduced. The following day he came to my place of work and handed me a letter. The rest is history! We were married the following year, 1965, and continued in Evangelism work for the first 17 years of married life.
