Helen's Story cont'd
Our first mission together was at
Strichin in Aberdeenshire. I was just learning to cook which wasn’t easy
with just 2 calor gas rings. I was so glad to receive boxes of Crosse and
Blackwell’s rejects and bashed tins, given by a friend who worked in
“Crossies” and I don’t think I’ve tasted mushroom soup or canned
herring since, however, it was the Lord’s provision and we were thankful
for it as we were totally dependant on the Lord to meet our needs. There
was a good attendance of children and adults at these meetings. From there
we pulled up the pegs and moved to Dufftown. There too, many children and
adults attended. I’ve met some of the children, now parents and even
Grandparents, who remember some of the choruses and Bible stories. Later,
Sandy and colleague John Gordon commenced Gospel meetings in some of the
coastal villages, Portknockie, Findochty, Portessie. From the start, the
power of the Lord was evident in these meetings. Many people came to
Christ and continue to this day and some have gone home to Glory.
The following year they were asked
to conduct meetings in Buchanhaven School in Peterhead. Unsaved people
attended those meetings and the presence of the Lord was strongly felt.
Quite a number came to faith in Christ. Sandy along with John designed and
built their own portable hall. State of the Art If I may say! Their first
mission was at Sandend in Banffshire, 1971. Many came to support the
meetings and souls were blessed in salvation. The portable hall was
designed to fit on a low loader in order to move from place to place as
far as Nairn where a number also came to the Lord.
It became increasingly difficult
to get planning permission for the hall and at this time, Sandy felt the
Lord leading in another direction. He went back to secular employment and
ran his own small joinery business. He was still active in the work of the
Lord and conducted services in various churches and fellowships over the
years.
It was a privilege and an honour
for me to be involved in the work of Evangelism even although I was just
“chief cook and bottle washer”.
